Climate Action

Introduction

As a mountain and recreation-based community, Avon has a close connection with the environment and understands that nature’s health and well-being is one of the town’s most valuable assets. Therefore, reducing Avon’s carbon footprint is one of the town’s priorities.

The Climate Action Plan for the Eagle County Community is our community's plan to address local climate change. The plan sets a goal for Eagle County to reduce its carbon pollution by 25% by 2025 and 80% by 2050. These goals align with what countries and cities around the world are targeting in order to avoid the worst effects of climate change.

Go 100% Renewable Today!

One meaningful way you, as an Eagle County resident, can help our community achieve its goals is by offsetting your electric energy use with renewable power.

Holy Cross Energy and Xcel Energy, our community’s electricity providers, already provide electricity from renewable sources. In order to address the power sources to the grid that come from fossil-fuels, Holy Cross Energy and Xcel Energy offer their customers a chance to offset the remainder of their energy coming from fossil fuels with renewable power!

Offsetting your personal energy usage with 100% renewable power (wind, solar or hydro) is one of the biggest things you can do to help us meet our goal to reduce carbon pollution by 25% by 2025 and 80% by 2050.

Climate Action Projects and Initiatives

Below are a few of the exciting renewable energy initiatives that Avon has undertaken:

In addition, Avon supports Actively Green which is a valley-wide campaign intended to engage all residents, guests and organizations in caring for our region’s unique natural environment. It is a reminder that regardless of where we live, for whom we work, or how choose to recreate, collectively our quality of life and our visitors’ experiences are dependent on the preservation of the outdoor playground we all share.

Actively Green means our efforts matter in a variety of ways and at a variety of levels, ranging from a hiker picking up litter near a trailhead, to a town increasing its recycling, to a tri-county effort to promote energy efficiency. We encourage a culture in which every stakeholder is Actively Green every day.
