World Famous Bike Zoo Comes to Avon in Celebration of Mavic Haute Route Rockies 2017

Avon, CO – The acclaimed Austin Bike Zoo will arrive in Harry A. Nottingham Park on Monday, June 26th to celebrate the finish of Stage 3 of the Mavic Haute Route Rockies 2017 bicycle race. Avon will welcome riders as they complete a 95-mile ride from Winter Park, and Nottingham Park will be abuzz with festivities, live music, a vendor village, and food and drink available for purchase. At 5:00 p.m., the Austin Bike Zoo will begin to construct zoo animals, which are larger than life creatures, assembled on bicycles. The ever-growing menagerie of giant, playful, interactive, hand-built creatures includes an 80-foot rattlesnake, a flurry of giant butterflies, a fanciful owl, majestic bald eagle and a bicycle carousel that can carry a dozen people at once! Their collection of zoo animals will engage people of all ages and captivate the imaginations of all who see or interact with the work. The zoo animals lead a parade on the Nottingham Park paths beginning at 7:00 p.m.  Everyone is encouraged to participate in the impromptu parade!

The Avon Police Department, Eagle County Sheriff’s Office and Sun & Ski have teamed up to sponsor a Bike Rodeo and Safety with a Cop from 5:00 – 6:45 p.m. for children of all ages. Live music will take place on the Performance Pavilion between 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., with Rewind Colorado entertaining audiences with classic and alternative rock cover songs from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s. Food by Marc will be providing wine and beer as well as delicious food options!

On Tuesday, June 27th, the Individual Time Trial will begin, with athletes leaving the park starting area, in timed intervals beginning at 9:30 a.m. The community is invited to cheer the riders out to Traer Creek Plaza and back onto Swift Gulch Road. After a rolling first four miles, riders will turn onto Buck Creek Road and climb up to Mountain Star before heading west to the finish at the top of Wildridge. There will be no spectator parking on Swift Gulch Road, Buck Creek Road, Wildwood Road or Wildridge Road. Spectators are encouraged to gather at Nottingham Park to cheer on riders from around the world!

Riders may take their time descending back to Nottingham Park to join the Avon community with live music, vendors and activities. The fun continues in Nottingham Park from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., with First Chair performing a variety of cover songs ranging for 70’s to modern hits and blues-infused southern classic rock at the Pavilion. Food by Marc will provide wine and beer and more delicious food options, and the Austin Bike Zoo will return offering rides on their interactive bicycle creatures.

The first ever week of Haute Route riding in North America features a total of 507 miles of riding in the spectacular setting of the Rocky Mountains and 49,260 feet of climbing. The event kicks off on June 24, 2017 in Boulder, Colorado and finishes on June 30 in Colorado Springs.  Three hundred fifty riders are expected to be riding in the race.
