Rock n’ Roll with a Heart: Battle of the Bands Raises Funds for Community Programs

Avon, CO – Four youth bands will battle for musical supremacy on August 4th from 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. at the Avon Performance Pavilion, while raising money for inteGreat!, a coalition of nonprofit organizations connecting people in Eagle County to much-needed health, food, and economic resources. Tickets are by donation, with a suggested $10 minimum, online at or at the door. Refreshments will be sold onsite, and concertgoers are asked to please bring their own chairs and blankets.

Featured youth bands include Vail locals The Martinellies, The Violet Tides from the Front Range music scene, Agulhas visiting from Baltimore, and Eagle County solo singer/songwriter Michael Evans. The MC for the night is Jeffery Cash of KZYR Radio.

Judging the concert and awarding $1,000 in prize money are Bluegrass artist and Hardscrabble member Jena Skinner; local radio legend, with a near 40-year career, Tony Mauro; and two-time Grammy-nominated musician and teacher Jake Wolf.

The youth-focused event raises awareness, donations, and funds to support inteGreat!’s collaborative efforts in Eagle County: increasing access to healthy foods for children and families, supporting volunteer Neighborhood Navigators who lead sustainable change in their neighborhoods and connect people to resources, and launching the InGEAR data dashboard project which will enable local nonprofits to work together more effectively in serving the community. The Martinellies

This Vail Indie Rock band is influenced by The Black Keys, John Mayer, Gary Clark Jr., Arctic Monkeys, and Jimi Hendrix. Members include Luis Juarez (guitar/vocals) and Alex Chirchillo (bass). For a sample original song, “Caravan,” visit

The Violet Tides

Hailing from Loveland, CO, this four-piece, alternative pop band has been performing on the Front Range since 2016 and recently released their debut EP. Members include Kenzie Culver (vocals), Mason Culver (drums), Dillon deBord (guitar) and Kaelan Ramirez (bass). Tony Mauro

Tony has been in radio since 1977; yes, he actually played 45's on the air. Over the years Tony has served as Program/Music Director for a variety of formats - rock, alternative, classic rock and country. The bottom line is that he has a good ear and knows a good song and band when he hears one! He is looking forward to discovering great local talent.

Jake Wolf

A two-time Grammy-nominated musician and teacher, Jake is celebrating twenty years in Colorado. He has performed with George Clinton and the PFunk Allstars, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, The Samples, Dark Star Orchestra, members of the Grateful Dead, Leftover Salmon, Greensky Bluegrass, and music legends Peter Rowan, Sam Bush, and many others. Known to his students as Mr. Wolf, he created and ran the only school of rock in a public school in the United States. During his time at the school he shared in part of the honor in receiving the US Department of Education's national blue ribbon award. He believes strongly that children have a right to music and has been establishing programs world-wide that help give children that right. He is honored to be a part of the panel of judges for the event.

Jena Skinner

Involved in music since elementary school, Jena has loved music since birth. Although she currently plays mandolin in the Eagle County bluegrass band, Hardscrabble, her main instrument is her voice. Jena has lived near Vail for almost 18 years, and outside of the band, also teaches voice via private lessons, and in workshops under the title, "Love to Sing!"
