Beloved Artist Glenna Goodacre Passes Peacefully

Avon honors beloved sculptor for contributions to Town’s bronze statue collection

Sculptor Glenna Goodacre died peacefully at her home in Santa Fe, New Mexico on April 13, 2020 after a series of illnesses. A Santa Fe resident since 1983, Goodacre had an international reputation but is most well-known for the Vietnam Women’s Memorial installed in Washington, DC on the National Mall in 1993 and for the Sacagawea U.S. Dollar first minted in 2000. Her largest piece is the massive Irish Memorial cast in 2002 for Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia.

The Town of Avon places a high value on public art and owns five wonderful Glenna Goodacre bronze sculptures known as the Sidewalk Society which were acquired in 1992. Between 1993 and 1995 Avon added to their collection of Goodacre’s work with the purchase of Sacagawea and Jean Bapiste, Basket Dancers and Pledge of Allegiance. Goodacre’s Spotted Tail is another gorgeous compliment to Avon’s collection privately owned by Hoffman Commercial Real Estate Development.  “The Town is heartbroken to hear of Glenna’s passing and she will always be fondly remembered as an important contributor to Avon’s heritage and amazing collection of bronze sculptures,” said Mayor Sarah Smyth-Hymes.

A graduate of Colorado College in 1961, Goodacre was an academician of the National Academy of Design and a fellow of the National Sculpture Society. She won many prizes, awards and esteemed honors throughout her lengthy career, including an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from her alma mater, Colorado College in 1994. In 1996, Goodacre received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from Texas Tech University in her hometown of Lubbock, Texas.

In 1989, Avon began its public art collection with the unveiling of Checkmate by cowboy artist Herb Mignery at the Town’s 10th Anniversary Celebration. Since then, Hoffman Commercial Real Estate Development and the Town have added to the collection which now stands at 29 bronze statues. Goodacre’s Sidewalk Society and many other works are available for all to enjoy on the Main Street Mall and throughout the Town core.

Memorial contributions in Glenna Goodacre’s honor can be made to the Glenna Maxey Goodacre Scholarship Fund at the Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation. For online donations, donors may visit https://www.kappaalphatheta.org/foundation-online-donation.  Memorial donations made by check should be made payable to Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation and mailed to Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation, 8740 Founders Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46268.
