TOWN OF AVON TO ASK COLORADO PARKS AND WILDLIFE TO ASSESS NEW PROPOSED TRAILS
Public tours of the proposed new trails in Wildridge scheduled

Avon, CO –The Avon Town Council concluded at its June 28th meeting that Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) should be consulted for an assessment of proposed new multi-use trails in the updating of the Town of Avon’s Recreational Trails Master Plan (Trails Plan Update). The Town’s Steering Committee, who oversees the Trails Plan Update, recommended to the Town Council a wildlife assessment be done based upon public comment received to date. Citizen comments have ranged from requests to conduct a professional wildlife study, to proceeding to approve the plan without a wildlife assessment, to denying the proposed Upper Metcalf trails due to current wildlife patterns.

The direction of Council, to consult with the CPW, is expected to provide specific wildlife data to help assess the impact of proposed trails on wildlife and how to mitigate any negative impacts, if trails are approved. The Town expects the CPW review to be completed by late July. In addition to this assessment, the Town will be finalizing the mapping of areas of Harrington Penstemon in the Upper Metcalf Drainage.

Once the CPW report is received, the Steering Committee will then complete its work to finalize the recommended Trails Plan Update. The Trails Plan Update will then be made available for the public’s review in preparation for the Avon Planning and Zoning Commission meeting now scheduled for August 16th. Once the Commission makes a recommendation on the Trails Plan Update, the Avon Town Council will consider the plan at two public meetings.

All meetings will provide for public questions and comments. Email communication and letters will be accepted into the public record, at any time, by sending comments to Avon’s Town Clerk Debbie Hoppe at dhoppe@avon.org.

The Trails Plan Update - Abstract can be found at www.avon.org/trails. As delineated in the Abstract, trails proposed in the Upper Metcalf Drainage (Upper Metcalf Loops - P1, P2, P3), the Wildridge Connector Trails (P4 & P5*), and connector trail north of and along Nottingham Road (P6) have been flagged to provide interested residents, trail users, the Town Council and Planning and Zoning Commission visual references prior to the adoption meetings. While hiking the proposed trails can be self-guided, hiking tours have been organized during the period of the CPW assessment. Reservations are required to join one of the following tours.
