Avon Names Greg Daly Chief of Police
20-year law enforcement career capped by promotion
The Town of Avon announced today that Greg Daly has been promoted to Chief of Police. He has been with Avon for eight years, and previously served as Deputy Chief. Virginia Egger, Avon Town Manager, said “It is truly a wonderful moment to announce Greg Daly as Avon’s new Police Chief. Greg exemplifies a caring commitment to the Town of Avon’s citizens and guests. He has strong leadership skills and holds the highest core values.”
Chief Daly first came to the Vail Valley in 1994, with his wife Gillian. They, like many, came initially for the skiing, and stayed for family and the quality of life. Born in Ireland, Greg began his career as a Banker, earning his undergraduate degree, with Honors, from University College of Dublin. After a period in banking, he and Gillian came to the Valley. He worked in many resort customer service jobs. He had the opportunity, however, to pursue a life goal and Greg joined the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy Sheriff in 1996. For a period of time he was a Reserve Deputy Sheriff. He rejoined fulltime in 2002. He then became a Field Training Officer. From there, he was promoted to the rank of Patrol Sergeant.
In 2008, he joined the Avon Police Department as Lieutenant, second in command to former Chief Brian Kozak. In 2011 as an ancillary duty, he became the SWAT Team Commander of the multi-agency Eagle County Special Operations Unit. Greg was promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief in 2014, second in command to former Chief Robert Ticer. When Chief Ticer left in May of this year, Daly was appointed Interim Chief of Police.
Chief Daly holds a Master of Science in Criminology, with Honors, from Regis University. Because of the exemplary work in his career, and his future potential in executive leadership, he was selected for the FBI National Academy, a recognition achieved by less than 1% of all Law Enforcement leaders in the country.
Chief Daly said: “I am honored with the privilege of serving as the next Chief of Police of the Avon Police Department. I am proud of our team and of our collective commitment to professionally serve the residents and guests of the Town of Avon. I will continue to grow our community policing philosophy and seek every opportunity to collaborate with our businesses, residents and guests.”
Chief Daly assumes his new duties immediately and will be formally sworn in at the Avon Town Council meeting on September 13th, when his Chief’s Stars and Badge will be pinned on him by his wife, Gillian and Mayor Jennie Fancher
