Climate Action

Introduction

As a mountain and recreation-based community, Avon has a close connection with the environment and understands that nature’s health and well-being is one of the town’s most valuable assets. Therefore, reducing Avon’s carbon footprint is one of the town’s priorities.

The Climate Action Plan for the Eagle County Community is our community's plan to address local climate change. The plan sets a goal for Eagle County to reduce its carbon pollution by 50% by 2030 and 80% by 2050. These goals align with what countries and cities around the world are targeting in order to avoid the worst effects of climate change.

On December 13, 2016, the Avon Town Council unanimously voted to adopt the Climate Action Plan for the Eagle County Community. The plan is the culmination of a year-long effort that included more than 30 Eagle County stakeholders who were tasked with reducing GHG emissions for the entire County. The plan was updated and readopted in 2020.

The 2020 Update to the Climate Action Plan for the Eagle County Community ternal link) establishes county-wide greenhouse gas emission reduction targets of 50% by 2030 and 80% by 2050 from a 2014 baseline. Energy use, transportation use, commercial buildings, waste and energy sources are all addressed within the plan, which is focused on climate mitigation. In order to meet the established targets, the plan also contains project recommendations for the community, including county government, towns, businesses, nonprofits, and other partners to begin immediate climate action.
