Man of the Cliff Celebrates 10 Years of Flannel Fun, Adds Live Music Component to Event Taking Place October 13 and 14 in Avon’s Nottingham Park

AVON, CO – Ten years ago, when a group of locals organized a small fundraiser in the hamlet of Red Cliff to see who had the best axe throwing and keg tossing talents, little did they know the event would become one of the Vail Valley’s favorite annual festivals. Over the years, Man of the Cliff has grown exponentially, drawing thousands of spectators and participants from all over Colorado. In 2012, organizers moved the event to Nottingham Park in Avon and added a second day to the festivities. This year’s event, taking place October 13-14, will feature more family fun than ever with a half dozen lumberjack-style competitions, delicious food and drinks and new this year, a free concert by the ever-popular Rebirth Brass Band with opening act, The Drunken Hearts.

In its first year, Man of the Cliff raised a few hundred dollars for First Descents, a non-profit founded in Vail that provides outdoor adventure trips and community support to young adults (ages 18-39) with cancer. The goal this year is to raise $50,000.

“Nothing says fall like flannels, Carhartts and lumberjacks. Man of the Cliff is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the changing of the seasons in the mountains,” said Amanda Williams, co-organizer of the event. “Whether you want to try your hand at one of the competitions like axe throwing or speed chopping, sample some great food and drinks, or get your swerve on with Rebirth, Man of the Cliff has something for everyone.”

Competitions at the event include hammer toss, archery, caber toss, speed chop, spear throw, keg toss, tug of war, axe throw and more. All events have been modified to allow men and women of all sizes and abilities to compete. Participants can sign up for a single event or all the competitions. Spectator day passes and concert tickets are just a $10 suggested donation to benefit First Descents - and kids are free.

On Saturday, October 13, Colorado rock band, The Drunken Hearts takes the spectacular stage in Nottingham Park at 5 p.m., followed by Rebirth Brass Band at 7 p.m. A “…New Orleans institution,” and leading the brass revival for more than 30 years, Rebirth Brass has garnered worldwide acclaim for its signature sound and knock-your-socks-off live performances. Food vendors and onsite bars will stay open during both shows.

Man of the Cliff is presented by Bonfire Brewing and the Town of Avon. Sponsors include Optimum Events, Defiance Rafting, EarthRoamer, Tito’s and Tin Cup Whiskey.
